It is with deep sorrow and regret that we observe the death of one of Plymouth’s most eminent sons – and Chairman of the Plymouth 400th Committee. Rev. Gomes passed away on Monday, February 28, 2011, at the age of 68. He had been in poor health for some time, and had suffered a stroke in December, 2010. It was his forthright action in volunteering to lead the effort that brought about the creation of Plymouth’s quadracentenial commemoration committee by the Board of Selectmen in September, 2007. Although the Committee will carry on the work Rev. Gomes began, and with 2020 Starts Now, Inc. (the 501(c)3 quadracentenial operations corporation), insure that his vision for observing Plymouth’s 400th birthday is brought to fruition, the shadow of his passing diminishes us all. It is an irreparable loss easily understood by all whom have had the privilege of knowing him. Rev. Peter J. Gomes was a unique Plymouth phenomenon, an unfailing inspiration and guide for us all, and his like shall not be known again.
Rev. Gomes’ funeral was held on Tuesday, March 8 at the First Baptist Church of Plymouth, 41 Westerly Road, with interment in the family plot in nearby Vine Hills Cemetary. There was a well-attended reception at Pilgrim Hall afterward.
