On January 20, 2009, Plymouth Town Clerk Laurence Pizer officiated at the official swearing in of the members of the 400th Anniversary Committee during the selectmen’s Tuesday night meeting. The committee is charged with preparing for and overseeing the town’s 400th anniversary celebration, now only 11 years away.

Chairman Gomes observed, “In my sermon on Sunday, I said it is my sense that, although Mr. Obama is not the Messiah, he may be as good as it gets and we should do everything in our power to help him. It was very wise of him, I think, to choose to be inaugurated on the day in which the 400th Anniversary Commission in the town of Plymouth is installed.”
